Purple Lights Nights occurs every year in October to "shine more light" on intimate partner violence in our communities. Purple Lights Nights began in Covington, Washington, in 2006, organised by the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force. In 1992, the communities of Abbotsford and Mission in British Columbia created a Domestic Violence Task Force called the VAWIR Committee. VAWIR adopted this campaign, and in October of every year, we now host an annual Purple Lights Nights Campaign.
This campaign is held in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to intimate partner violence, and to support those who are still living with abuse and those who have survived intimate partner violence. The Purple Lights Nights Campaign is meant to increase awareness among community members about the presence and effects of intimate partner violence in our communities, and increase awareness about the available supports and programs.
